How a Pressure Switch Works
This part plays a critical role as your furnace prepares to warm your house.
Here’s what occurs after your thermostat’s call for heat:
- Your furnace’s control board begins running the draft inducer blower motor. This pushes out combustion gases from the heat exchanger and moves in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
- When the pressure switch senses that enough air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and signals the control board to ignite the furnace.
- Your furnace ignites and creates heat.
What Happens When a Pressure Switch Fails
When your pressure switch isn’t functioning the way it should, you’ll likely hear the fan start and the switch clicking a couple times before the furnace turns off completely. When a part isn’t functioning right, your furnace will turn off for your safety.
Your furnace will let you know something is wrong with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to exhibit error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.
You may see fast flashes or an alternating slow flash as it communicates a fault code.
