Common Memphis AC Problems and Solutions

June 13, 2016

We’ve discussed some of the most common air conditioning problems Memphis faces, but today we are here to tell you about some typical air conditioner troubles that you can help troubleshoot.

The A/C is on but not releasing cool air.

If your AC is running but not actually cooling, you may need to have your refrigerant levels inspected. Refrigerant is necessary to make sure the air blowing from the AC is truly cool and keeps you comfortable. Low refrigerant is commonly an indicator of a leak or that the system wasn’t charged correctly.

An easy way to see if you are low on refrigerant is to go out to your air conditioning system and find the two copper pipes. If the bigger pipe is “sweating” or producing condensation, put your hand on the pipe and feel if it’s cold. If it feels cold, you are most likely good to go and don’t require additional refrigerant.

If you’re not certain or the pipe is not producing condensation and is not cold when you feel it, call Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning and we’ll stop by and check your refrigerant levels and find out why your system is not blowing cool air. Note: only an EPA Certified technician should work on refrigerant for central air conditioners, due to the dangers of handling this potentially dangerous chemical.

You air condenser fan isn’t turning.

There are multiple reasons your condenser fan may not be circulating. One could be that it just burned out and you require a replacement. Humidity generally causes more condensation so another issue to watch for is that the water is not draining right or that the drain is obstructed. If you can check for these things, you may be able to locate the trouble; but, if not, give Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning a call and we can inspect what is preventing your condenser fan from circulating and review your options to get your air conditioner problem corrected.

Your air conditioner is not providing ample air cooling.

The first step is to try decreasing the temperature on your thermostat. It seems absurd but sometimes our busy lives cause us to miss the obvious. If that doesn’t get your system working right, check and get a new air filter. If the air filter is obstructed, it could cause significant cooling issues. Another thing that could be causing your lack of cooling is an air conditioner that is not sized correctly, and unfortunately this is an all-too-common issue when homes are constructed. Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning is happy to come out and conduct an analysis to confirm whether or not the size of your A/C system is causing your issues.

A/C system shuts on and off constantly

If your air conditioner is short cycling, or turning on or off consistently, it could mean one of multiple things. One thing is that your condenser or evaporator is obstructed or dirty and in need of cleaning. Once the system is cleaned and all obstructions moved aside, you may be back to a typical running AC. Keep in mind that humidity also plays a role so if the home cools to the proper temperatures, but then the humidity causes your home to heat up quickly, it could result in an on-again, off-again AC because it’s having to work harder to keep your home cool and comfortable.

No matter your issue, whatever common or uncommon A/C issue you run into, Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning is here for you all day, everyday. We are available all the time so we can get your air conditioner cooling and get your comfortable as soon as possible.
