Common Memphis AC Problems and Solutions

June 13, 2016

We’ve discussed a few of the most common air conditioning problems Memphis faces, but today we are here to tell you about some common air conditioner problems that you can help troubleshoot.

Your air conditioner is on but not releasing cool air.

If your A/C system is running but not actually cooling, you may need to have your refrigerant levels inspected. Refrigerant is necessary to make sure the air blowing from the AC is truly cool and keeps your home comfortable. Low refrigerant is often a sign of a leak or that the system wasn’t charged correctly.

An easy way to see if you are low on refrigerant is to go out to your air conditioning system and find the two copper pipes. If the bigger pipe is “sweating” or giving off condensation, put your hand on the pipe and feel if it’s cold. If it feels cold, you are probably good to go and don’t require additional refrigerant.

If you’re not convinced or the pipe is not covered in condensation and is not cold when you feel it, call Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning and we’ll stop by and examine your refrigerant levels and discover why your system is not blowing cool air. Note: only an EPA Certified technician should handle refrigerant for central air conditioners, due to the dangers of handling this potentially dangerous chemical.

You air condenser fan isn’t turning.

There are multiple reasons your condenser fan may not be circulating. One is that it just burned out and you require a replacement. Humidity generally causes more condensation so another issue to watch for is that the water is not draining right or that the drain is obstructed. If you can check for these things, you may be able to find the trouble; but, if not, give Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning a call and we can determine what has stopped your condenser fan from circulating and review your options to get your air conditioner problem corrected.

Your A/C is not providing ample air cooling.

The first step is to try lowering your thermostat. It seems absurd but sometimes our busy lives cause us to miss the obvious. If lowering the thermostat doesn’t get your system working right, check and get a new air filter. If the air filter is obstructed, it could cause significant cooling problems. Another problem that could result in your lack of cooling is an air conditioner that is not sized properly, and unfortunately this is an all-too-common issue when homes are built. Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning is happy to come out and complete an analysis to determine if the size of your A/C system is causing your troubles.

A/C system shuts on and off over and over

If your AC is short cycling, or turning on or off consistently, it could mean one of several things. One thing is that your condenser or evaporator is obstructed or dirty and needs to be cleaned. Once the equipment is cleaned and all obstructions moved aside, you may be back to a typical running AC. Keep in mind that humidity also plays a role so if the home cools to the proper temperatures, but then the humidity causes your house to heat up quickly, it could result in an on-again, off-again system because it’s having to work harder to keep your home cool and comfortable.

No matter your issue, whatever common or uncommon A/C trouble you run into, Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning is here for you all day, everyday. We are available all the time so we can get your air conditioner cooling and get your comfortable quickly.
